Back then, when I didn’t know how to sharpen my own knives, I remember buying a couple of extra blades that I could use when the one I was using became dull. It’s such a hassle, especially since the mall is an hour’s drive away from home. It’s a good thing I came across The Maker’s knife sharpening tutorial on YouTube, which uses only a mug. It’s a practical solution to my impractical way of doing it.
Sharpening knives only needs a rough surface called “sharpeners.” Sharpeners have a rough surface, usually composed of the silicon minerals that most mugs have at the bottom end – an abrasive surface. Surprisingly, many items we use in daily life have similar rough surfaces that are very suitable for sharpening knives. However, this tutorial uses the Mug, a nifty and easy-to-grab item close to the blade stack.
Materials:
Directions:
Prepare all the needed materials.
Flip the mug, bottom facing up, and place the blade flat. Raise the knife’s back at an angle of 20 degrees, where the gap should be enough to fit your finger.
Wet the surface of the bottom mug with little drops of water, using a sponge to keep the pores clean.
Place the knife back on the edge and grind the blade across the edge while maintaining the 20-degree angle. Repeat a few times until the blade sharpens.
When sharpened, damp the bottom of the mug with water and repeat the process with the other side of the blade. Carefully test the blade by slicing a sponge.
Make sure to be careful when doing the whole process and repeat it to sharpen the rest of your dull knives.
