Fabric Requirements:

  • 3 1/2 yards of dark fabric (includes border)
  • 3 yards of white fabric
  • 3/4 yard binding fabric
  • 5 1/4 yards of backing fabric

Directions:

Step 1

To make the first block, take a 5″ white square and two 3/4″ squares with drawn lines from corner to corner. Place them over the white square on opposite sides, then sew right on the lines. Trim out the excess, and press open. Repeat these four times. Once you have all the pieces, lay them out to form the X block. Sew them together like a four-patch.

Step 2

Now, make the bar blocks. Cut a 5″ x 9 1/2″ strip X WOF from the dark fabric and subcut it into 5″ rectangles. Repeat this on your background white fabric, then subcut it into 2 3/4″. For each block, you’ll need two of those white rectangles, and you’re just going to sew one along either long side of the dark rectangle. Press open afterward. To complete the quilt top, you’ll need 20 X blocks, 31 bar blocks, and 12 solid dark squares.

Step 3

Now, lay out the quilt top. Start by laying an X up in the corner followed by a bar block, then another X block. For the next layer, rotate the bar block, then a solid dark square, and another rotated bar block. Repeat this pattern until you finish laying out the quilt top.
