Rich and Smooth Hot Chocolate

Nothing can beat a rich and smooth hot chocolate on a cold day! This recipe by Downshiftology is rich and delicious – the perfect drink to warm you up during the winter season. It’s super easy to make and only requires a few ingredients. You can top it with whipped cream or marshmallows to make it extra fun. Read on or watch the video below for full instructions.

Ingredients

• 4 cups of milk (dairy or dairy-free)
• 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder
• 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey
• 4 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate 50%-60% (approximately 2/3 cup of chocolate chips)
• 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)

For garnish (optional)

• whipped cream
• marshmallows
• cocoa powder

Instructions

Step 1:

Finely chop the semi sweet chocolate so it melts and blends completely in the milk.

Step 2:

Place a saucepan over medium heat. Add four cups of milk, 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder, and 2 tablespoons of maple syrup. Whisk well as it warms up until the cocoa powder dissolves. Make sure there are no clumps. Let it come to a gentle simmer. Whisk often. Make sure not to walk away from it, as milk can easily boil over on the stove.

Step 3:

Once the milk is in the low simmer stage, add the finely chopped chocolate and continue to stir. As the chocolate melts, you’ll notice the color change from a light brown to a deep dark brown. Keep whisking for 5 minutes on a simmer. This will ensure you don’t get any chocolate clumps in the bottom of your mug or cup.

Step 4:

Pour into your mug or cup. If you add any toppings, leave a bit of room at the top, so you don’t overflow the mug. Add a few dollops of whipped cream, marshmallows, and cocoa powder on top if desired. Enjoy!
