You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to ask for an HVAC professional to fix your central air conditioning that is not cooling. Of course, it’s still important to get annual service from a professional to keep it in the best condition. But these 3 simple tips by Silver Cymbal will be a big help and will definitely make a big difference!
Clean the return vents on your air conditioning system. You’ll have one or two of these vents in your ceiling, sometimes they are on the floor. A lot of times these get caked with dust that restricts airflow. Just take your vacuum with a dust brush and spend a few minutes cleaning the vent thoroughly.
The biggest problem that most HVAC professionals see today is that people buy incredibly high-efficiency filters. The issue with those is that they restrict airflow too much and your system was not designed for that kind of restriction. Throw them out and get the standard fiberglass filter which can make a big difference. They are designed perfectly for your system, they allow the right amount of airflow, and they protect the system against large particles.
Your outside unit could be clogged with dust, leaves, debris, or dirt. These units pull air in all the time. If they don’t ever get cleaned it can be a real problem. The first thing you need to do is go to your outside breaker and turn it off. You need your garden hose and a bottle of soap. Dilute the soap as you want very soapy water. Once diluted, squirt the outside edges of your unit with soapy water through the side vents, then rinse all the soap using a strong garden house. Do not use a pressure washer!
