Grits are one of the staples when it comes to southern breakfast side dishes. Paula Deen’s tutorial on YouTube shows how to make tomato grits, which is unique. I’ve always thought grits were boring and I didn’t care for them. However, these tomato grits look amazing because they’re loaded with cheese and butter. Paula Deen’s tomato grits are one of her most popular menu items from Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen, and it looks like a must-try. No matter if you live in the south or not, I think it’s a great idea to try this recipe out to see if you like it or not. I think her tomato grits might change my mind because they look so creamy and cheesy.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup quick-cooking grits
  • 1/2 cup and 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/3 diced green onions
  • 1 (6 oz) garlic cheese roll
  • 2 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 (10 oz) can diced tomatoes and green chilies
  • 2 lightly beaten eggs
  • 4 oz cubed processed cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions:

First, preheat oven to 350F. Watch Paula Deen’s tutorial on YouTube for full instructions on how to cook the grits over the stove. When finished, start adding the cheese, butter, and green onions.

Next, add in the can of tomatoes. Whisk the eggs in a bowl and temper them by adding the hot grits to the beaten eggs while stirring it all together. Pour the egg mixture back in the pot and mix well. Transfer the tomato grits into a casserole dish and bake for 40 minutes.

I love hosting brunches at my place because it’s a great way to get my group of friends together during this pandemic. While we still like to dine out, it’s more fun to make homemade breakfast foods at the comfort in your own home. I will add Paula Deen’s tomato grits to my southern breakfast brunch list.
