In a saucepan with the heat turned off, add 2 cups of milk, 2 1/2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of granulated sugar, and a dash of kosher salt. Whisk until well combined.
Whisk in the egg yolks.
Turn on the heat and cook the pudding on medium heat, while whisking continuously. Whisk until it gets to your preferred consistency, which takes about 7 to 8 minutes. If it sticks to the spoon, the mixture is ready. Turn the heat off.
Add the butter and vanilla extract to the mixture. Whisk to combine.
Add a thin layer of the pudding in your 8″x 8″ baking dish, followed by a layer of Nilla wafers, and a layer of banana slices. Pour half of the pudding, then repeat the wafer and banana layers. Lastly, pour the remaining pudding. Set aside.
Make the meringue. Add four egg whites to a clean dry bowl and beat with a hand mixer. Add a teaspoon of cream of tartar and whisk until it stiffens. Next, gradually add the powdered sugar while whisking. Keep whisking until stiff peaks.
Transfer the meringue to the top of the pudding. Broil for about 1 to 2 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on it.
