To make this classic banana pudding, you will need 8 simple ingredients – sugar, evaporated milk, all-purpose flour, egg yolks, butter, vanilla, and wafers. I’m sure you already have most of them in your pantry if you love making dessert recipes. If not, you can easily find them in your local grocery. One of the most common questions people ask when making this yummy dessert is how to keep the bananas from turning brown. To keep the slices from turning brown in banana pudding, all you need to do is toss them in a little bit of lemon juice. Your mouth will surely water after you’ve made this recipe!

Classic Banana Pudding Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 2 cans (12 oz each) evaporated milk
  • 6 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 4 egg yolks (beaten)
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 5 bananas
  • 1 box of Nilla wafers


How to Make Banana Pudding

Step 1:

In a pot, add the sugar, milk, and flour. Mix and place over medium heat. Continue stirring until it is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon. Make sure to keep stirring so the mixture won’t burn or stick for about 20 minutes or more.

Step 2:

Slowly add the beaten egg yolks to the milk mixture 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time. Stir constantly.

Step 3:

Remove from heat, then stir in the butter and vanilla.

Step 4:

In a 9 x 13 dish, start assembling the banana pudding. Assemble in the following order ending with Nilla wafers on top: custard -wafers -bananas – repeat. Once done, cover with cling wrap and chill for 3 to 4 hours or overnight.

Top it with whipped cream and crushed Nilla wafers. Serve and enjoy!
