Ants don’t like cinnamon because it impedes their ability to smell other things, such as food. Sprinkle this spice onto areas where they might enter your home. You can use this in your garden as well. Just sprinkle some on the soil around your plants that ants infest. This will keep them from climbing the stems and eating the fruits.


Anything citrus. Fruits, scents, or oils are all effective natural repellants. You can leave orange peels or lemon juice in areas where they linger can help keep your home free from these pests. You can also mix citrus oil with water and transfer it to a spray bottle.

Coffee grounds

Did you know that used coffee grounds are very effective at repelling ants? This is because of its high acidity. Place your used coffee ground anywhere you have any problems.

White vinegar

Most of us probably have white vinegar on our kitchen shelves. It helps in repelling ants as they hate the smell of it. Mix one cup of water with a quarter cup of white vinegar to make your ant-repellant spray. Transfer the solution to a spray bottle, then apply it wherever you see ants.

Black pepper or cayenne pepper

Sprinkle a bit of these spice directly on anthills, pathways, and around the entry points of your home. This is an excellent natural substitute for chemical insecticides.


Cloves give off a strong scent when crushed and sprinkled near ant trails or entry points around your home. You can also put cloves in your pantry or food storage to prevent ants.

Peppermint essential oil

This type of oil is been known to ward off a number of pests because of the strong smell of mint.


One way to use this is to set up a barrier of sorts by lining the perimeter of your home with cedar mulch. You can also fill a few cloth sachets or decorative bowls with cedar shavings and place them throughout your home.
