Materials:

  • 42-count jelly roll
  • 1 yard of background fabric

Directions:

Step 1

Subcut the background fabric to eighty 2 1/2″ squares and eighty 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. For each jelly roll strip, subcut to two 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles, four 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, and two 2 1/2″ squares. Repeat these steps for all 42-count jelly rolls. After this, select one 2 1/2″ square, one 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ background fabric, and within the same print, select one 2 1/2″ square, two 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, and one 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. With both your print and background 2 1/2″ squares, draw a line from corner to corner. Then with your print 2 1/2″ square, place it right sides together on the background 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle. Lastly, with the background 2 1/2″ square, Place it right sides together on the print 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle.

Step 2

Sew directly on the line you drew, then trim a 1/4″ away from that line you just sewn. With those two units you just created, sew them together, then build the block like a log cabin by adding the same print in a 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle to the right side of the new unit, followed by the print 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle to the top of the unit to complete a 6 1/2″ quilt block. Repeat these steps until you have a total of eighty quilt blocks. Once you have all the mini quilt blocks, arrange these into a four-patch, rotating your blocks 90 degrees to form a pinwheel. Once you have all the four-patch blocks, lay them in a 4 x 5 layout, then sew them to form rows, and sew those rows together to complete the quilt block.
