When I found this awesome video tutorial by Deer Meat For Dinner, on YouTube, describing many different ways to sharpen a knife, I was so excited to see all of these methods of sharpening knives explained in detail. This video describes every method of sharpening a knife and tells you how to use each method effectively, then weighs up the effectiveness of each one. The method he says does not work very well is the one that most people use. You know the one that just about everyone has in their kitchen, that is the long metal cylinder, that the YouTuber describes as a file, and compared to these other methods, does not work well at all.
One of the methods that does work really well is the Arkansas Stone that has three different stones. You start with the roughest, then work your way to the smoothest. The most important thing to do while using any sharpening stone is to run the knife along the stone diagonally. You basically run the knife in the direction that you cut, which is diagonal.
The very best method, the YouTuber concludes, is to use a belt sander. All the different belts are described in great detail, and how they work on knives is thoroughly explained.
This is a great video, I learned so much.
