There has been a time where there was a yeast shortage in the grocery stores because everyone was stuck at home and wanted to make bread or some sort of food that required yeast. My Taste on YouTube shows how to make homemade yeast with ingredients that are easy to get and you may already have in your pantry. It’s interesting that there are recipes that can substitute and work for about anything, and I didn’t look them up when the yeast shortage was a problem. The pandemic crushed a lot of ingredients and supplies, and I didn’t look for alternatives.
First, mix honey with lukewarm water in a bowl. Mix in the sugar and keep stirring until dissolved. Set aside and mix flour and curd together. Pour the honey mixture into the flour bowl and stir until fully incorporated.

Next, wrap the bowl with saran wrap, and keep it in a warm place for 24 hours. Mix the yeast mixture until the ingredients aren’t separated and try it out by adding it to your flour that needs yeast. Continue to watch My Taste tutorial on YouTube for full instructions and details.
Overall, this is like a yeast slurry or sourdough starter that works for recipes that need yeast. I need to try this method out and see if it works because it can be money-saving if you already have these ingredients at home. Most likely I have all of these ingredients because I love to bake, and it’s good to know how I can use this in case I do not have yeast or if it’s sold out in stores. I’d be interested to see if this works.
