This sweet potato biscuit recipe by Jamie Dement was made on the Hallmark Channel on YouTube, and it’s healthy. Also, this recipe has a substitute to use gluten-free flour for those with a gluten allergy. I’ve never had sweet potato biscuits, but I am a big fan of sweet potatoes, and  I love the orange color that the sweet potatoes give off. I love biscuits in general, but this is perfect for the holiday time to make these for a dinner roll. The sweet potato biscuits can be served as a sweet snack or a savory depending on how you dress them up.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ½  cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cup mashed cooked sweet potatoes
  • ½ cup softened unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons cane syrup
  • 4 to 5 tablespoons buttermilk (depending on the moisture of the potatoes)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream

Directions:

First, preheat the oven to 450F. Sift together flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. In a separate large bowl, mix the sweet potatoes, cane syrup, and butter. Add the flour mixture to the potato mixture and mix everything together to make the dough. Continue to watch Hallmark Channel tutorial on YouTube for full instructions and details.

Next, once the sweet potato biscuit dough is ready, roll it and shape it into a circle, and cut with a biscuit cutter. Place the biscuits touching each other in a cast-iron skillet or buttered pan and brush the tops with heavy whipping cream. Bake for about 15 minutes.

This can be a perfect holiday treat, and I would add butter and some seasonal jam too. I think of the country and southern meals when I think of biscuits. These would be filling to eat because sweet potato is a usual carb that keeps me full easily.
