When I found this wonderful video tutorial by Sweet Simple Vegan, on YouTube, that describes how to make your produce last longer, I was so excited! The biggest pet peeve I have is when my produce goes bad, no matter what I do, I just can’t believe how bad the situation can get.

Materials And Tips That Are Helpful For Storing Produce:

  • Don’t store potatoes and onions next to each other, (the onions off-gas ethylene, which causes your potatoes to spoil quicker).
  • Keep potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, and garlic in a cool dark place in the kitchen, (refrigeration of these items can lead to quicker spoilage)
  • Store your fresh herbs as you would flowers (that is in water, and in the fridge, unless the herb is basil, which does better on the countertop)
  • Avocados do well on the countertop until they ripen then you refrigerate, (you know when they are ripe when the stem pops off very easily)

For a better way to preserve carrots and celery, you will begin by cutting your carrots and celery into stalks and placing them in a jar, then covering them with fresh water. You will then cover the vegetables with a lid and place them in the fridge. I was so happy to find this one because I love celery, and the stalks wit really quickly.

You can also, store nuts in jars in the refrigerator. Believe it or not, nuts can go rancid quite easily, so it is good to keep them cool and dry.
