I’m in between nervous and amazed when I saw how to make a floating bed. Nervous, because what if it breaks on me in the middle of the night. Amazed, because this is so cool and it creates a real illusion that the bed is actually floating. This tutorial by HomeMadeModern is not cheap. Honestly, it’s a cool idea and concept, but if you’re on a budget then I would say find other alternatives to recreate this. This requires welding and wood woodworking. It’s a pretty complex tutorial, but if you follow the directions and playback the video at the same time, there shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re impatient then this project is not for you either. I love the idea and how minimalist this floating bed appears. It’s very natural, simple, and fresh.

Materials:

  • White Cedar Slab
  • 1-1/4” Acrylic
  • Simple Finish
  • Maker Brand T Bar Clamps
  • Magswitch Clamps
  • Rust-oleum Rusty Metal Primer
  • Rust-oleum Protective Enamel in Gloss White
  • Forney Welder
  • Ryobi Circular Saw
  • Ryobi Drill + Driver
  • Ryobi Angle Grinder
  • Ryobi Palm Router
  • Ryobi Orbital Sander

Directions:

First, the frame of the bed is made out of a 1″ steel square tube. Use the angle grinder and welder to cut the different sizes.

Next, continue to watch HomeMadeModern video on YouTube on how to construct the floating bed. I believe this can be a whole day or a couple of days project, so make time to gather your materials.

Overall, I think this is a great project and would love to try something like this. The design aesthetic is really nice and it reminds me of a floating cloud. This video didn’t include the measurements, but based on what size of bed you like, I would advise googling it. The standard size I would want for a bed would be a Queen size.
