Ingredients:

Vanilla cake

  • ¾ cup butter
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 ½ cups flour
  • 4 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cup milk

Buttercream icing

  • ¼ cup room temperature butter
  • ¾ cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp butter flavor
  • 3-6 tsp water
  • 4 cups icing sugar

Directions:

Step 1: Prepare the vanilla cake

Cream together the butter, sugar, and vanilla extract, then add the eggs one at a time while consistently mixing until they are well combined. In a separate bowl, add the flour, baking powder, and salt, then mix them together until well combined. Add the dry mixture into the wet mixture in four additions alternating with milk, mixing after each addition until combined. Divide the batter into two, then put some red and blue food coloring on each, and mix them well until uniform. Line 2 8-inch round pans, and 2 1-inch round pans with parchment paper, then divide the red cake batter on each pan evenly and pour the blue cake batter on the 8-inch pan. Put them in a preheated oven and let them bake at 350°F for about 45 to 60 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the buttercream icing

Cream together the shortening and butter over medium speed for about 2 minutes, then add the salt, vanilla extract, and butter flavor, and mix them together until incorporated. Sift the icing sugar one cup at a time over the mixture, then continue mixing them together over low speed until well combined, and whip them over high speed for about 2 minutes. Add half a teaspoon of water at a time between additions of icing sugar until you get your desired consistency. Divide the cream into three batches evenly, then add red and blue food coloring to each of the two buttercream icing mixtures.

Step 3: Assemble the cake

Remove the parchment paper on each cake, then remove the top of each cake to make it flat, and trim off the sides as well. Next, cut the red cake into two layers, then grab a 3.5 inches cookie cutter, and cut the smaller red cake and blue cake at the center. Lay 1 layer of red cake, then pipe buttercream on top spreading it evenly, and repeat the process until every 8-inch layer of red cake is used. Pie and spread another layer of buttercream on top of the last layer of red cake, then place the blue cake on top, grab a small piece of the round red cake layer and insert it at the center of the blue cake, pipe another buttercream, then place the other small red cake layer. Cover the whole cake with the white buttercream, then it’s time to use the red and blue cake. Pipe the red and white buttercream around the cake alternately to create stripes. Pipe the blue buttercream on top, then make a white fondant, and cut small stars to decorate the top.
