Materials:

  • Reusable snap mouse trap
  • Shoebox
  • Bait
  • Sunflower seeds or peanuts
  • Hot pepper/ garlic spray

Hot pepper/ garlic spray

  • 1-gallon water
  • 10-12 hot peppers chopped fine or 5 tablespoons hot pepper flakes (cayenne works well for dry)
  • 10 cloves garlic, chopped fine
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Step 1

If you want to repel rats from your garden, the most effective way to do it is by placing a snap mouse trap in your garden, it is quicker, more effective, and reusable. You can also put it inside a shoe box, then cut a small hole at the side, and place the bait. If you want to repel squirrels, you can buy wolf and coyote urine online, once the squirrels get a whiff of this they would immediately run away. Another is that you can actually give them what they want by placing sunflower seeds or peanuts and some water for them. You can also try to set a trap, then catch and release them just to scare them away, this will also make them go somewhere else.

Step 2

Add the peppers, garlic, and water into a large pan, then bring it to a simmer for about 15 minutes while occasionally stirring. If you are using hot pepper flakes, you can heat them for a few minutes and dry them in a pan to help release the oil before adding them to the water mix. Next, strain the liquid of the mixture into a gallon or jug removing the peppers and garlic, then add a teaspoon of olive oil, and stir or shake to help disperse the oil through the mixture. Now, you can use this to cover your plants with a fine mist.
