Materials:

  • Jeans
  • Rit dye or Dylon dye
  • Dishwashing soap
  • Rit colorstay fixative
  • Salt
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • A container for dyeing
  • Rubber gloves

Directions:

Step 1: Black (Dylon Dye)

Before you start dyeing the jeans, make sure to machine wash them with detergent and warm water. Next, lay plastic on your work surface to cover it, then wear some rubber gloves. Dissolve the powder dye in 4 cups of warm water, then stir them together until completely dissolved. Get a large container, then fill it with as much warm water as needed for the jeans to move freely, add 4 tablespoons of salt, and stir them thoroughly. Place the jeans in the mixture until completely submerged, then stir it around constantly for about 15 minutes, and let them sit in the dye mixture for about 45 minutes stirring occasionally. After letting it sit in the dye, rinse the jeans with cold water, then the machine washes them in warm water, and air dry making sure to hang them away from direct heat or sunlight. Wash a couple of times to remove the excess dye.

Step 2: Denim Blue (Rit Dye)

Fill a large container with 3 gallons of hot water, then add a cup of salt, and about a teaspoon of detergent. Now, shake the bottle of dye before pouring it into the water, add half a cup of dye or a full bottle if you want a darker color. Submerge the damp jeans and stir them constantly for the first 10 minutes making sure that every part of the jeans are being covered with the dye. If you want a darker color, leave the jeans in the dye bath for at least 30 minutes while stirring regularly. In a separate container, fill it with about 3 gallons of hot water, then add half a cup of fixative for every pound of dry fabric. Put the jeans in the solution and stir them around for 20 minutes, then rinse the jeans in cool water, machine wash on warm water, and dry. Wash it separately at first before washing it with similar colored clothes.
