This pillowcase quilt finish method from Needlepointers on Youtube is another way for you to finish your quilt without using a binding. This finishing quilt technique is also called the envelope method, and it’s ideal if you have quilt projects like crib quilts, placemats, table runners, wall quilts, etc. Learn this super easy technique by watching the video tutorial below.

Materials:

  • your quilt project
  • ruler
  • rotary cutter
  • pins

Directions:

Step 1

The first thing to do is to square your quilt, then cut your batting and the backing about 2″ larger than the quilt top. After this, pin all the way around the outside. Next, place your quilt on top of it, right side down, and smooth it out, then pin it all the way around about 6 to 8″ apart. Now, start sewing your project using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Leave a gap of about 8 to 10″ depending on the size of your quilt. (You have to leave a large enough gap so you’ll be able to turn it right side out.) When you get to the corner, turn your wheel so it’s down, then pivot your project and continue sewing.

Step 2

After sewing, you’re going to trim the backing and the batting to the exact size of the quilt top using a ruler and rotary cutter. Trim the batting close to where the seam is all the way around so it won’t be bulky. After this, clip the corners, then turn your quilt right side out through the gap. Now, pin the gap shut and sew it close. The last thing you’ll do is either you’ll tie the quilt or you could hand or machine quilt it.
