It sucks cutting an onion because most likely you’ll start tearing up and it’ll start to burn. Cooking With Jack Show on YouTube shows the secret to cutting an onion without crying. Honestly, I don’t know why we cry when we are chopping onions, but after this tutorial, I’ve learned some great tips and tricks. Although I don’t mind shedding a few tears while cutting an onion, I think this is an interesting tip to keep in mind to avoid the tears.

There is a piece on the onion that looks like a bulb of roots. It contains some type of gas that releases which causes you to cry from the onion. So, take your knife and cut about 1/3 deep around the diameter of the onion. Start off with the bottom of the onion and cut in a circle. It should look like a cone shape, and you will see the bulb that is in the center. Throw it away.

Cut from the endpoint to root

When you’re cutting an onion, do not cut it on its side or straight through the onion. Cut from the endpoint down to where the root was. Then, chop it however you like.

Overall, the goal is to take the bulb out of the onion before chopping it because that is what triggers the gas smell and starts giving you tears. I didn’t realize it takes that easy step to remove, and I’m going to try this out because I hate the burning feeling when I cut onions. However, some people may say it will be a waste to remove all of that from an onion. It’s a great option or hack to try out if you want to avoid crying.
