I have a pair of Birkenstocks at home, and it is my favorite sandals to wear for errands. It’s warm, super comfy, and just goes well with any outfit. I still remember the first time I bought it. But it looks completely different now. After several uses, it looks dirty and a bit gross. The footbeds turned black, and I am sometimes ashamed when people saw it. Yes, I could buy a new pair, but let’s be honest, it’s expensive. Nothing was damaged, and it still worked great, so why buy a new one? I could also get it professionally cleaned, but I am trying to save some money, so that was not an option. I looked for video tutorials on YouTube and found Amber Resells‘ video on how to clean Birkenstocks properly.

I immediately gathered all the products that I needed. Luckily, I already had all of them, as it only required basic household items. You only need baking soda, dish soap, and water for the homemade cleaning solution. I did the same steps in the DIY tutorial, and the results were amazing. My sandals look so much better now! No more black footbeds for me.

In a small container, add 2 parts water, 1 part baking soda, and a squirt of Dawn dish soap.
First, dip your toothbrush into the solution and wet the footbed, then gently scrub it to remove the dirt.
Wipe off the solution with a clean dry rag. It will have a white residue but do not worry.
Get the other rag and damp it. Make sure to wring it out. Do not use a very wet rag. Gently wipe the footbed to remove the residue.
Set it aside and let it dry for a few hours or days. Do not place it in direct sunlight or any place with extreme heat.
