We use oil in almost everything that we cook and it’s very important to use oil wisely to make sure that nothing goes to waste. Some would discard the oil upon one usage thinking that it was already too dirty to reuse. This hack by America’s Test Kitchen on YouTube will teach you to clean frying oil so that you can reuse it up to three times! If you want to learn how then read the full instructions and watch the video tutorial down below.

Materials:

  • Coffee filter
  • Cornstarch
  • Fine mesh strainer

Directions:

Coffee filter straining method

The first and simplest thing that you can do is to try and strain the frying oil using a coffee filter. Although, this method takes a while and can leave the oil with a slightly “used” taste. Simply line a fine-mesh strainer with a coffee filter, then place it over a large container. Pour the oil through the filter, then allow it to drain, and discard solids.

Cornstarch slurry method

This method is the easiest and quickest way to clean frying oil but keep it tasting clean at the same time. Whisk together ¼ cup of water and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch for every cup of frying oil, then add it to warm or cooled oil and heat it gently over low heat without letting it simmer. Stir it constantly for about 10 to 12 minutes or until the starch begins to solidify. Remove the oil from heat and strain it through a fine mesh strainer or use a slotted spoon to remove the gelled mixture.
