Southern chow chow is a delicious relish that tastes great on sandwiches and makes an excellent condiment for any meat dish. Recently, I found a chow chow video tutorial recipe by Whippoorwill Holler, on YouTube, and I knew I had to make some. This relish is one of my very favorites, and I would always wanted to make it. Canning has become my new hobby and I have covered a lot of ground with my pickling so far, but I am ready to move onto some pickled vegetables, and chow chow is going to be a great start to this new chapter.

Ingredients For Chow Chow:

  • 1o cups of cabbage (shredded)
  • 2 large green tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 large onion (chopped)
  • 4 bell peppers Chopped)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of canning salt or Kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seed
  • 2 teaspoons of celery seed
  • 3 cups distilled white vinegar
  • 3 cups of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 2 cloves of garlic (minced, or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)

Then you lightly cook your chow chow and place in mason jars.
