If you’re looking for an elaborate quilt pattern that is easy enough for beginners, try this hopscotch quilt from Missouri Star on YouTube. This quilt pattern is a long-time favorite of mine, and I must say my cutting skills improved – thanks to this quilt. I love how gorgeous this quilt is, but still easy enough for beginners. Try this one out today; you’ll surely love it! Watch the video tutorial below to learn the step by step instructions.

Materials:

  • 1 print jelly roll
  • 1 jelly roll for background fabric (includes inner border)
  • 1 1/4 yards of outer border fabric
  • 4 yards of backing fabric (vertical seams) OR 2 yards of 108″ wide backing fabric
  • 3/4 yard of quilt binding fabric

Directions:

Step 1

To start, lay two strips on top of one another, then cut two sets of 2 1/2″ squares, and two sets of 6 1/2″ rectangles. Do this to 25 of your strips and keep them together in piles. For the rest of your strips, sew them in groups of three, then cut them into 2 1/2″ segments. After this, choose three different segments, sew them together, and then press to make the little nine-patch. Now, choose the borders from the 6 1/2″ rectangles for all the sides of the nine-patch piece. Once you have the borders, sew two 2 1/2″ white squares on both ends from corner to corner. Do this to all the four borders.

Step 2

Once done, lay the borders, making sure they’re all in the right direction, then trim off the sides and press them open. Once done, put the borders around the nine-patch, then sew both sides right in. For the borders on top and bottom, sew 2 1/2″ colored squares on both ends before sewing them to the nine-patch. Press them nicely afterward to finish off the block. Repeat these steps to make 25 blocks in total. Once you have your blocks, lay five across, and five down to complete the quilt top.
