Oranges are one of the most famous citrus fruits all around the world. They are sweet, tart, and rich in vitamin C. The best thing about this fruit is that it is versatile. You can use everything from the flesh, juice, and rind, so don’t throw the peels next time you eat oranges! You can grate the zest and add it to your dishes or turn all the peels into these delicious homemade candied orange peels.

I used to think you could not eat the white part of orange skin, but after some research, I learned that you can actually eat it. In fact, it is good for you as it is packed with nutrients. The only downside is its bitter taste.

To make these candied orange peels by Elegant Sweets, you need to boil them several times. This process will remove the bitter taste of the white part and make them soft as well. You can serve them as is or coated in sugar.

Candied Orange Peel Ingredients

  • three oranges with thick skin
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 1/4 cups of sugar
  • 1.7 oz of orange juice (about 1/4 cup)

Note: thoroughly wash the skin of the oranges

How to Make Candied Orange Peels

Step 1:

Start by removing the skin of the oranges. Make sure to include the white parts. Cut into thin strips.

Step 2:

Add water into a pot and let it come to a boil. Once boiling, add the orange peels and boil for a minute. Strain using a colander, then rinse them with cold water.

Step 3:

Repeat step 2. Set aside.

Step 4:

Make the syrup. In a saucepan, add 1 cup of  water, orange juice, and sugar. Mix then let it come to a boil.

Step 5:

Once boiling, add the orange peels and place the lid. Cook on low heat for 90 minutes.

Step 6:

After 90 minutes, turn off the heat and leave the candies peel in the syrup to cool down. Transfer to a bowl with the syrup in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. You can also dry them. Place them in a baking sheet and bake in a 158F preheated oven for about 20 minutes.  Put in an airtight container and store in a cool place.
