Identification. There are a lot of different species of cockroach: American, German, smoky brown, brown-banded, Asian, and oriental. Look at the body size, markings, and harbor areas. They can harbor indoors and outdoors.
German. They are 1/2″ in length and are typically found in the kitchen and bathrooms inside wall voids.
Asian. Similar to German cockroaches in size, found outdoors in decaying matter and can fly.
American. They are 1 and 1/2″ in length, typically found outdoors but come inside through cracks, and can fly.
Smokey brown. They are 1 and 1/4″ in length, have a burnt appearance on the edge, and are typically found in the attics, kitchen, and bathroom.
Brown-banded. They are 3/4″ in length, found indoors and outdoors, have two light bands on their back, and are found in attics and basements.
Oriental. They are 3/4″ in length, found in flowerbeds, don’t fly, and are jet black.
All of these types need food, shelter, and moisture.
Inspection. Start with your kitchen and bathroom. Look for droppings, smear marks, or even activity up underneath the kitchen sink where the plumbing penetrates the wall. For the outside, check around the perimeter of the house in the flowerbed areas if there are cracks. Next, check if your windows or doors have cracks.
Control. For the kitchen, clean the countertop, sweep the floor, and take your garbage out. Next, is the treatment. Use a gel bait to allow the cockroaches to feed on it and they go back to the nest areas and defecate the nip stages actually feed on their feces. This creates a domino effect that will wipe out the whole colony. You can also use an insect growth regulator. For a detailed explanation of how to control them, watch the video below.
Prevention. Seal or repair cracks, holes, voids, or crevices in all infested areas and take the garbage out frequently. Also, remember to always clean the dirty dishes and wipe the sinks dry.
