Fancy Friends Quilt Tutorial

One of my favorite quilt patterns is this fancy friends quilt from Missouri Star on YouTube. This may look complicated, but I’m telling you, it’s pretty easy to make, and you can do this even if you’re a beginner. I love this pattern so much and I think it looks gorgeous with bright-colored fabrics. Watch the video tutorial below to learn how to make this beautiful quilt.

Materials:

• 1 roll of 2 1/2″ print strips (includes pieced border)
• 2 3/4 yards of accent fabric
• 4 1/2 yards of background fabric (includes inner and middle borders)
• 1 1/2 yards of outer border fabric
• 3/4 yard of binding fabric
• 8 1/2 yards of backing fabric

Directions:

Step 1

To start, choose a strip, fold it in half, and cut four 4 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips. Once done, put a 2 1/2″ square on the top corner of each of the strips (make sure it’s going in the right direction and once you get one block done, keep it right by you), then sew from corner to corner, from right to left. Trim them after sewing, then press open. Next, take your background fabric and cut 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ pieces (you’ll need four of these per block). Then, cut eight 2 1/2″ squares from your accent fabric.

Step 2

Now, place the 2 1/2″ accent squares on each top corner of the 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ background pieces, then sew corner to corner, from left to right. Do all the tops one way, then do the bottom part exactly the same. (This is the opposite of how you made the earlier strips). Trim them, then press open. Repeat these until you have all the pieces needed. Once done, start laying out the block. Alongside your friendship star strip, put an accent block on each one. Sew them, then turn one unit, and sew them together. (See the picture below). Repeat these, making two more units, to complete the friendship star with accent block. Make more blocks to make your desired quilt size.
