One of the most important ingredients that you must have for almost all recipes that you cook is onion, and nowadays, it has gotten a bit pricey, so you should make sure that you get the most of them and that nothing would go to waste. Here are 5 different ways that you can store them to keep them fresh for 1 week to 1 year by CiCi Li – Asian Home Cooking on YouTube.
Method #1: Store onions outside the fridge
Grab a mesh bag, paper bag, or a basket, then place the onions inside, and then put it in a dark, dry, and cool area making sure that there is good air circulation with a temperature ranging between 40-50°F or 4-10°C. You should also keep in mind to never store onions with potatoes to keep them fresh for longer which is around 3 to 12 months.

Method #2: Store onion halves in a Ziploc bag
If you only need half an onion for your recipe, then make sure to not peel off the skin of the leftover half, and put it inside a Ziploc bag immediately pushing out as much air as possible. Place it inside the fridge crisper and it will stay fresh for up to 2 weeks.
Method #3: Store sliced onions in an airtight container
If you want your onions sliced and ready for your recipes, then chop, slice, or cube them before putting them inside an airtight container, and put them inside the fridge. This method can make the onions last for a week.
Method #4: Freeze the onions
Slice or chop the onions thinly, then place them inside a Ziploc bag and put them in the freezer, and then take out a portion whenever you need it for your stir-fried or soup recipes. This method can make the onions fresh for longer lasting up to 6 months.
Method #5: Wrap whole onions in paper towels
Wrap whole onions (much better if they are sweet onions) in paper towels or put them inside a cloth bag making sure they have good air circulation, then store them in your fridge crisper, and use them whenever you need them. This method can help make them last for 1-2 months.
