This pattern is so much easier than it looks. It is called the orange peel quilt block by Missouri Star which is also commonly called pumpkin seed quilt or football quilt. For this project, you need 5-inch squares and a football-shaped template. It was so fun to make, and you’ll also learn a simple interfacing technique by Jenny Doan if you follow the steps. Read on or watch the video below for full instructions.

Materials:

  • 4 packs of 5″ squares
  • 4 packs of 5″ background squares
  • circle magic template(football-shaped template)
  • rotary cutter

Instructions:

Step 1:

Take one of the printed squares and lay your template diagonally. Slowly cut it out using a rotary cutter.

Step 2:

Get your interfacing and fold it in half. Do the same thing with the template.

Step 3:

Lay your cut-out fabric down and get the cut interfacing. Feel the bumpy side and place it on top of the fabric. Line it up and sew a quarter of an inch on the outside edge, completely enclosing. Trim the ends a little bit – do not cut on the stitches.

Step 4:

Pinch the interfacing and fabric using your two hands away from each other, then cut a V in the interfacing. Turn it right side out.

Step 5:

Take your 5-inch background fabric and line up the football shape diagonally and press it down with an iron. Make sure that the points are a quarter of an inch away from the edges. Sew it around the edges with a blanket stitch. Make 3 more of this block.

Step 6:

Arrange the blocks into a four-patch. Put them together so that all points are facing toward the middle. Sew with a quarter of an inch seam allowance.
