Ingredients:

Crispy onion topping

  • 2 white onions, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp of panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp of salt

Green bean casserole

  • ½ pound of bacon, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of chicken broth
  • 1 cup of half and half
  • ½ tsp of black pepper
  • ¼ tsp of ground nutmeg
  • 1½ pounds of fresh green beans, trimmed and halved

Directions:

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 450°F, then lightly grease your baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray, and set it aside. In a large mixing bowl, add the sliced onions, flour, bread crumbs, and salt, then toss them together until well combined and evenly coated, and then transfer them to the prepared baking sheet spreading them evenly. Put them inside the preheated oven, then let them bake for about 30 minutes making sure to toss them every 10 minutes. While waiting for the onions to bake, prepare to cook the rest of the ingredients. Place a large skillet pan on a stove over medium heat, then add the bacon, and cook until nice and crispy.

Step 2

Once the bacon is done, add the garlic making sure not to drain the rendered grease, then saute for about 30 seconds, and add the flour, give them a good stir until well combined and dissolved. Next, pour the chicken broth, half and half, black pepper, and nutmeg, then give them a good mix to combine, bring them to a boil, and let them simmer for about 3 minutes until the sauce has thickened. Lightly grease a 9×13 inches pan, then place the green beans, and pour the bacon mixture all over the top. Toss them together until well incorporated and coated, then sprinkle the baked onions on top, and let it bake at 450°F for about 15 minutes. Serve while still hot and enjoy!
