In as fast as 2 weeks you can fix your lawn and make it look incredible using the overseeding method. So, be sure to check this video tutorial out to learn all of the necessary steps and helpful details to bring your curb appeal to the next level.
Step 1: Mow lower
Mow your lawn and cut the grass a bit lower, about 2 to 2.5 inches would be a good height. If your lawn turned out a little rough, then it’s alright, you don’t have to worry about it because it will fix itself nicely once you’re done with the process.
Step 2: Dethatching
Check your lawn for any thatch or dead grass buildup, make sure to check down by the soil layer, then if you find a spongy brown and dead organic material, you might need to do a dethatching process to remove all of those buildups. This step also helps open up the yard and prepare it for the new seed.
Step 3: Core aeration
This step is not technically essential but it can help the process of overseeding your lawn as it gives a top dressing for your yard and allows the seeds to grab onto something. The holes you open up all over your yard also help air, water, and nutrients penetrate the soil better. Grab a screwdriver and insert it down your soil, if you can easily push it through, then there is no need for this step. However, if you struggle to insert the screwdriver, then it is highly recommended that you do this step.

Step 4: Seeding and seed types
Add the new seeds right at the top of your existing lawn and make sure to use a lawn spreader to help distribute them evenly. For your grass seed, make sure to use tall fescue especially if you are from a much warmer area, this type of grass can stand the heat more and has a higher drought tolerance, plus, it’s easier to grow, too.
Step 5: Starter fertilizer
Don’t add the starter fertilizer at the time of seeding and wait for about 3 to 5 days or more before the new seed comes. You want to make sure to slow the growth of your existing grass a little bit while the new grass starts to grow.
Step 6: Watering
This step is not that complicated, you just have to make sure that your grass is kept wet and prevent it from drying out. However, do not go overboard to the point that there are puddles of water all over your lawn, just keep a balance watering schedule, 2 to 3 times a day would be good.
