To make hummus, you only need chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, cumin, salt, and water. If you don’t have tahini, you can use cashew butter as a substitute. Top it with olive oil, ground cumin, paprika, or sumac to make it more flavorful. You can also add nuts for some texture.

Serve hummus with vegetables, pita bread, chips, crackers, or apples.

Easy Hummus Ingredients

  • 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas or 1 1/2 cups of cooked chickpeas
  • 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup of well-stirred tahini
  • 1 small garlic clove (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil (plus more for serving)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • salt to taste
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of water
  • dash of ground cumin, paprika, or sumac for serving

How to Make Hummus

Step 1:

Drain chickpeas, then run ice-cold water over them for about 4 minutes. Remove the chickpea skin for ultra-smooth hummus.

Step 2:

In a food processor, add 1/4 cup of tahini and 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice. Blend for 1 minute. Scrape the sides and process for 30 seconds more.

Step 3:

Add minced garlic. If you want it to be more garlicky, add more garlic cloves. You can also use roasted garlic. Next, add 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon of cumin, and salt. Blend for another minute until mixed.

Step 4:

Scrape the sides. Add the chickpeas in two batches, scraping the sides and bottom to make sure everything is mixed. After one or two minutes, the hummus will be smooth.

Step 5:

Add water and blend again. Adjust the amount depending on the consistency that you want.

Step 6:

To Serve, drizzle olive oil and sprinkle paprika. Enjoy!

Store in an airtight container. Place plastic wrap on the surface of the hummus then cover with the lid. It can be stored in the fridge for about a week and a month in the freezer.
