Most of the ingredients you need for this recipe are probably already in your kitchen. It can be served as an appetizer or side dish. To make this dish, you need to dredge the okra in a buttermilk mixture, and then coat it with the oatmeal mixture. Once they are all coated, all you need to do is fry them until golden brown. You can serve them with homemade ranch dressing, garlic mayo sauce, or jalapeno yogurt sauce.

In a medium mixing bowl, add buttermilk, egg, and water. Whisk until well combined, then set aside.
Add cornmeal, flour, salt, and pepper in a 1 gallon plastic bag. Shake to mix all the dry ingredients, then set aside.
Add the sliced okra into the buttermilk mixture and soak for 5 minutes.
Using a slotted spoon, remove 8 to 10 slices of okra one at a time to remove excess mixture. Transfer them into the cornmeal mixture. Shake until okra is well coated, then transfer the mixture to a cooling rack. Continue until all the okra is coated.
Add vegetable oil in a 12″ skillet until 1/2″ deep and place over medium heat. Heat the oil to 375F. Add 1 piece of coated okra to test the oil. If the oil sizzles around the edges of the okra, continue adding more. Make sure not to over crowd the pan. Fry them until golden brown, then drain on paper towels.
Serve warm with your favorite dip.
You can keep them warm in an 175F oven for up to 30 minutes.
