Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 (8 oz) loaf of crusty French bread, cut into bite-sized pieces (or more as needed)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Topping:

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar, or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, or to taste

Directions:

Step 1

To start, slice your loaf bread into bite-size pieces. In a large bowl, crack six eggs, then gradually add 2 cups of milk and 2 tsp vanilla extract while whisking. Next, add 1/2 cup of butter and 1 cup of brown sugar to a saucepan over medium-low heat, and mix until the butter melts and the sugar is kind of dissolved. Spread this mixture along the bottom of your casserole dish.

Step 2

After this, add the sliced bread, then pour the custard mixture over. Cover the casserole with plastic wrap and refrigerate it overnight. When you’re ready to bake, simply remove the plastic, and sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture over the top. Place the casserole dish in a 45o degrees F oven and bake for 30 minutes.
