Depression cake is a soft and moist treat that rose to popularity during the great depression, and it’s typically made without eggs, butter, and milk, so safe to say it’s also gluten-free or dairy-free! It is also a more budget-friendly and easy way to make a cake because the ingredients that you’ll need are commonly available in your kitchen.

In a large bowl, add the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt, then whisk them until uniform, and pour in the coffee or water, oil, vanilla, and vinegar. Stir them until well combined, then transfer the batter to a baking dish, and place it in an oven preheated at 350°F. Allow it to bake for about 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted at the center comes out clean, then let it cool completely, frost it, dust it with powdered sugar, or serve it as is, and enjoy!
