Take 1 dark square and 1 background square, place them right sides together, then sew all the way around the edges with a quarter of an inch seam allowance. Do the same with 1 dark square and 1 light square, and 1 light square and 1 background square.
Cut the sewn squares diagonally from corner to corner in both directions to make 4 half square triangles. Press them open with an iron.
Arrange the light-dark half-square triangles into a pinwheel for the center of the block.
Connect the remaining half-square triangles to make the star. Once done, place the 6.5″ corner squares to make the star block. Sew them together with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Make the small center block. Take a layer cake and cut it in half in both directions to make 4 squares.
Get one small square, fold it in half diagonally, and press with an iron. Place it on one corner, right sides together. Make sure that the edges are aligned. Sew it diagonally from corner to corner with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Repeat with the remaining three squares. This method is called snowballing the block.
Trim the corners off about a quarter of an inch from the seam line. Press them flat with an iron.
The sashing strip is 2 1/2″ by the size of your block, while the cobblestone is 2 1/2″ square.
