Instructions

Step 1:

Get a 10″ colored square and a 10″ background square. Place them, right sides together, with the background on top. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner in both directions to make an X. Sew on either side of the lines, then cut it in the center in both directions and on drawn lines. Press them open toward the dark side. Square them into 4 1/2″ squares.

Step 2:

Get one 2 1/2″ colored strip and a 2 1/2″ background strip. Sew them together on one side. Press it open. Make another one with the same matching color but a different fabric. Cut 2 pieces of 4 1/2″ units from each strip unit.

Step 3:

Get a 4 1/2″ contrasting square and place the four 4 1/2″ units on all sides with the background toward the outside. Next, get the half-square triangles and place them on the corners with the colored side facing towards the center. Sew them in rows first. Iron the first and third rows in the same direction and the middle in the opposite direction. Sew the rows together. It should be 12 1/2″.

Step 4:

From your same strip sets earlier, cut 12 1/2″ pieces. Place them on the sides of the block. Make sure the whites are on the outside. Next, add the remaining half-square triangles on the corners. Make sure the background fabric is facing outward. Sew them on rows first. Press the seams just like in step 3, then sew the rows together.
