This pattern by Jordan Fabrics may look complex and hard to sew, but it’s actually not. Even beginners can easily make this simple design. Donna’s five-star quilt is only made using half-square triangles (HST). Arrange these HSTs into star and chevron blocks, then lay the two blocks together and you form this gorgeous shape. Read on or watch the video below for full instructions.

Instructions:

Step 1:

Make the half-square triangles (HST). You’ll need 72 light and 72 dark 5″ charm squares. Get a light 5″ square and draw a diagonal line on the back side from corner to corner. Place the light fabric on a dark fabric square, right sides together, then sew 1/4″ away from each side of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line to get two half-square triangles. Open then press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Cut “dog ears” and trim them to measure 4 5/8″ square. Make a total of 144 HST units.

Step 2:

Make the star blocks. Get 16 half-square triangles and arrange them as shown below. Sew into rows, and sew the rows together. Press seam allowance in alternating directions. Repeat to make five stars.

Step 4:

Arrange the star and chevron blocks as shown in the picture of the finished quilt. Sew into rows then sew the rows together. Steam press it very flat.

Step 5:

For the inside border, cut 6 at 2″ width of the fabric. Sew around all four sides of the quilt. For the outside border, cut 7 at 4 1/2″ width of the fabric. Sew around on all four sides. Quilt, then bind.
