I love this craft idea, and with the holidays coming up, this is a great idea for those that live in an apartment or house that does not have a fireplace. However, I think a faux fireplace with a mantel gives off a cozy decoration where you can put up stockings. There are many people who live in apartments or far from family, so this is a great way to still celebrate Christmas and have stockings up. This faux fireplace can be a process to make, but it can be worth it in the end. I can tell this is a whole day’s worth of the project, so if you plan on making this, set some time aside because it’ll take some time.

Supplies:

  • a big tv cardboard box or cardboard
  • utility knife or saw (to cut down the cardboard)
  • ruler
  • hot glue gun
  • cardstock
  • scissors
  • spray paint
  • tape measure
  • duct tape
  • clear tape
  • double sided tape
  • foam
  • black paper

Directions:

First, measure out the spot where you will be placing the fireplace. Use the utility knife or saw to cut and break down the cardboard box. Create the bottom piece for the fireplace and add foam. Then, take the cardboard box and tape it to the wall, and draw a rough sketch of the shape of your fireplace. Continue to watch HGTV Handmade tutorial on YouTube for full instructions and details.

Next, once the structure is built and spray painted, decorate the faux fireplace. You can add “brick pieces” by cutting out brick shapes using cardstock.

Overall, I think this is a cool idea to set up in your apartment, and you can save this to reuse for many years too. You can decorate the faux fireplace like a real fireplace, and by adding fabric on top, you’ll be able to pin stockings directly to the fabric.
