  • 4 tbsp vanilla custard powder
  • 3 1/2 cups of milk, divided
  • 1/2 cup of sugar


  • 1 cup of warm milk, divided
  • 1/2 tsp yeast
  • 1/2 cup + 1 tsp sugar, divided
  • 4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 – 3 drops of vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 yolk + 3 tsp milk (eggwash)
  • almonds and raisins


Step 1

To start, make the custard. Combine 4 tbsp vanilla custard powder and 1/2 cup of milk in a medium bowl. Mix well until no lumps and set aside. Heat 3 cups of milk in a saucepan, then add 1/2 cup of sugar and the custard mix. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens. Once thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool completely. In the meantime, make the dough.

Step 2

Add 1/2 cup of warm milk in a mixing bowl along with 1/2 tsp yeast and 1 tsp sugar, Mix well and leave it for ten to fifteen minutes. In another bowl, add 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of sugar, 2 eggs, 2 to 3 drops of vanilla extract, 2 tbsp butter, the bloomed yeast mixture, and 1/2 cup of warm milk. Mix everything until dough forms. After this, knead the dough until smooth and soft. Cover the dough and leave it for two hours.

Step 3

After two hours, knead the dough for a minute and then roll it into a flat rectangle shape. Add the custard mixture over and spread it nicely and evenly. Once done, roll it into a log and stretch to elongate it. Cut the log into 1/2″ pieces and arrange them into a greased baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the eggwash mixture over each custard piece, then top it with some almonds and raisins. Bake them to a preheated 350 degrees F oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
