Pre-cut fabrics are fantastic for making quilts as they save you a lot of time. You don’t need to cut your own fabric piece by piece. Plus, they come in coordinated color palettes. Pre-cut pieces are also beginner-friendly and perfect for quick projects. You can find a lot of free quilt patterns online that use precut fabrics. If you’ve ever tried using a pack, I am sure you’ll agree how convenient they are.

The only downside is that they can be expensive. If you are on a budget, they might not be the best option. Yardages and scraps will become your best friend if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on jelly rolls, charm packs, layer cakes, strips, and more. There is a churn dash quilt pattern from Nancy’s Notions that you can easily make from your yardage and fabric scraps. Watch the video below for full instructions. Happy quilting!

Easy Churn Dash Quilt Materials

  • 5 3/8” squares – first color (2) and second color (2)
  • 4 pieces of 3 ½” colored square
  • 8 pieces of 2” colored square
  • 4 pieces of 3 ½” x 2” rectangle
  • 3 ½” colored square

How to Make a Churn Dash Quilt Block

Step 1:

Make half-square triangles. Take two 5 3/8” squares in two different colors and place them on top of each other with right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Sew ¼” away on both sides of the line, then cut directly on the line. Press each one open. Now, you have 2 half-square triangles.

Repeat the same process for the remaining 5 3/8” squares to make a total of 4 HSTs.

Step 2:

Place the 2” square on the top corner of the 3 ½” square with the right sides facing. Sew a diagonal line from corner to corner on the small square. Sew directly on the line, then trim excess. Press it open. Repeat on the other top corner.

Sew one 3 ½” x 2” rectangle on the bottom. See the photo below for reference. Repeat with the remaining pieces to make a total of 4 units.
