Chicken fried steak with white gravy on top is popular here in the south, but I prefer just regular fried chicken. Simply Mamá Cooks on YouTube shows how to take a cheap cut of cubed steak and make crispy tender steak. This is a classic southern comfort meal to make, and it’s an easy recipe to follow along with. The recipe consists of prepping the meat, coat with the flour dredge and egg mix, and fry in oil. I love how southern meals take almost about anything and frying it in oil.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 lbs to 2 lbs cubed beef steak
  • NOTE: cubed steak can be beef top round or beef top sirloin
  • cooking oil for frying

Flour Dredge:

  • 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp season all salt
  • 1/2 tsp onion salt blend
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Egg Mix:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk (or buttermilk)
  • 1/2 tsp season salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Cream Gravy:

  • 3 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 2 1/2 to 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 to 2 1/4 cups
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

First, prep the meat. Take the steak and use a meat pounder to flatten it evenly thin. Then, prep the flour dredge and egg wash to coat and fry. Continue to watch Simply Mamá Cooks tutorial on YouTube for full instructions and details.

Next, fry the steaks in a shallow pan or skillet in cooking oil. Flip the steaks occasionally and watch for the outer layer to be golden brown. Once finished, place on a baking sheet rack so the oil can drip off.

Overall, the chicken fried steak recipe goes well with a side of vegetables and mashed potatoes. White gravy is one of my favorite kinds of gravy, and dipping the steak in it would be a great southern comfort meal.
