Start by cutting off the crust of bread slices.
Spread softened butter over each slice.
Get one of the bread slices, and place it butter side up. Add one slice of gouda cheese, followed by ham slices, then add another slice of gouda cheese on top. Place the other slice on top butter side down to make the sandwich. Slice into two or three equal slices.
Add one large egg and 1/4 cup of milk in a bowl, then season it with salt. Whisk until well combined.
Dip the sliced sandwiches into the egg and milk mixture for just a few seconds. You don’t want to soak it.
Place a pan over heat then add butter. Once melted, add the sliced sandwiches and toast until golden brown. Flip them to the other side and cook until golden brown and the cheese has melted.
Serve warm with your favorite sauce. Enjoy!
