Are you looking for a super simple quilt to do for the weekend? Try this checkered path layer cake only quilt from Moonkin Stitchery on Youtube! This quilt may look complicated, but it’s actually pretty easy to make. This is one of my go-to quilt patterns whenever I need a quick quilt for gifting my loved ones. You can also use the layer cakes you’ve been saving for a project, as this quilt will surely look good in any print. Try this out today and see for yourself. Watch the video tutorial below to learn the step by step instructions.
With each layer cake, subcut two 5″ x 10″ rectangles, then with one of the rectangles, subcut it into 2 – 2 1/2″ x 10″ rectangles. For piecing, select two 2 2 1/2″ x 10″ rectangles in different fabric prints, and sew them together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Once sewn together, cut it into 4 – 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ mini rectangles. Lastly, with those mini rectangles, rotate a few to form a checkered board pattern, then sew them together with a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Continuing on with the blocks made in step one, select a 5″ x 10″ rectangle in a different print and sew it on the right side of the unit made in step one. Once you’ve ironed the rectangle open, trim the excess fabric off. Repeat this and make 42 blocks for a throw-size quilt. Now for laying out your quilt top, lay your blocks and rotate every other block so the checkered board sides are touching. For a throw-size quilt, lay six blocks per row and make a total of seven rows. Sew these rows together to complete your quilt top.
