This calico star quilt by Missouri Star might look like a complex block, but it is not. Believe me when I say that it is an easy block. You will be making 3 blocks with different designs to make the star – the center, corner, and middle. Don’t get overwhelmed – even beginners can easily follow the steps since all of the blocks are just made using half-square triangles.

The three beginner-friendly blocks that you will make are the broken dish block, chevron block, and a half-square diamond block. If you have made these before, this pattern will be easy for you. It is also a great way to use up all of your HSTs.
To make a ton of HSTS all at once, use the magic 8 method. You can create eight half-square triangles with a piece of a 10″ background square and a piece of a 10″ colored square. It’s a faster way to make HSTs, than just doing them one by one.
Take a piece of background and draw an X from corner to corner. Place it on top of a colored square. Sew 1/4″ away on both sides of the lines. Cut directly on the lines and in the middle horizontally and vertically. Square them into 4 1/2″ squares and press them open towards the dark side.
Make the broken dish block. Arrange the half-square triangles just like in the photo below. Sew them together to make the block. You need four of this block.
Make the center piece. Get four pieces of HSTs and arrange it into a four patch so that the background sides all come together in the center forming a diamond. Sew them together to make a block. You only need 1 of this block.
For the chevron block, arrange four pieces of HSTs into a four patch forming an upward arrow. Sew them together to make the block. You need four pieces of this block.
Arrange all the blocks just like in the photo below. Sew them together to make the calico star block.
