The onions are soft and sweet, buttery and herby, and straight up will make everyone’s mouth water. Moreover, it’s a budget-friendly recipe and so easy to make. You can definitely manage your time more and focus on other main dishes. Check out the video below to learn how to make these delectable onions!

Ingredients:

  • 6 small to medium onions, skins left on with top and bottom trimmed
  • 3 tbsp butter, cut into 6 slabs
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp cracked ground black pepper
  • 1 – 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, and sage)
  • 3 bay leaves
  • balsamic vinegar, to taste
  • Maldon flaked salt (optional, for garnishing)

Directions:

Step 1

Start by trimming off the top and bottom of the onions, leaving the skins on, then arrange them on a small casserole. Sprinkle 1/2 tsp fine sea salt on top as well as on the bottom of each onion. Broil them in your oven until the tops turn golden and the skins char in places. In the meantime, prepare your fresh herbs, thyme, rosemary, and sage, and chop them finely.

Step 2

Once done broiling the onions, place a slab of butter on each top, and a mound of a generous amount of fresh herbs. Sprinkle with some ground black pepper and add three bay leaves to the casserole. Cover it with aluminum foil (or parchment paper), and bake until the onions are soft (about 60 to 90 minutes). Serve them as they are, or remove the skins. Enjoy!
