This recipe by Cooking with Kirby is truly the best cheesy scalloped potato recipe you can ever make at home. The cheese sauce is delicious and very easy to make. You can serve it at any occasion as a side dish. Read on or watch the video below for the full recipe.


  • 3 cups of shredded cheddar cheese (or any cheese you like)
  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • potatoes (depending on the size of your potatoes)

For the cheese sauce:

  • 2 teaspoons of garlic puree or 2 garlic cloves chopped or 2 teaspoons of minced garlic

Step 1:

Peel the potatoes and slice them using a mandoline. Make sure not to slice them too thick and too thin.  Soak them in a pot full of water so they won’t turn brown while preparing the cheese sauce.

Step 2:

Place a saucepan over low heat. Add the butter and let it melt. Add the garlic and mix with the melted butter for about 1 minute. Keep stirring as you don’t want the butter to turn brown. Next, add the 4 tablespoons of flour and give it a good mix. Let it cook for about 2 minutes just to remove the flour taste while continuously stirring.

Step 3:

Add the milk one cup at a time to the mixture, while continuously stirring until it thickens. Next, add some salt and pepper to taste.

Step 4:

Add 1 and 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese to the sauce and let it melt while stirring. Cook it for a little bit, then turn off the heat.

Step 5:

Strain the potatoes and place in a bowl. Pour in the cheese mixture and give it a good toss.

Step 6:

Transfer to a gresed baking pan and top it with the remaining cheddar cheese.

Step 7:

Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour. After the first 40 minutes, remove the cover and continue baking for 20 minutes uncovered to brown the top. Once done baking, let it cool down before serving.
