Valentine’s day is near, and I found the perfect small project you can make to celebrate it! Here’s a beginner-friendly quilt heart ornament tutorial by Erica Arndt on Youtube. Use all of your fabric scraps to make this instead of throwing them away! You can make it in different sizes – you can use the small ones as an ornament and the bigger ones as a mug rug. It’s super easy to make and is ideal for beginners in quilting. You can also quilt as you go if you like. Read on or watch the video below for full instructions.
Note: the finished size is 4″ x 4″

Place the baking fabric right side down, then put the batting on top.
Take two strips and place them right sides together along the left edge of the quilt batting. Stitch the two strips together along the right side with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Make sure you sew all through the layers.
Fold the fabric open and continue adding the other strips in the same method until you cover the entire piece of batting. Finger press after every addition of strip. You can quilt the top of the strips as you go if preferred.
Trace the heart template onto the completed QAYG fabric, then stitch along the heart-shaped line. Cut along the heart shape using pinking shears. Press it with an iron to flatten it.
Get the cotton string and cut it into a 7″ strand. Thread it through the top center of the heart then tie the ends to make a knot.
