One of the first patterns I sewed when I was still a beginner in quilting was this bento box quilt block by Teresa DownUnder. I love how simple yet playful it looks. It’s perfect for those who are just starting, as it’s straightforward and doesn’t have complicated steps. Read on or watch the video below for full instructions.

Make block one. Get the 4″ square and place the two white 4″ x 2 1/4″ strips on top and bottom. Sew the strips with a 1/4 inch seam allowance and press them open.
Rotate the block. Sew the 2 white 7 1/2″ x 2 1/4″ strips on top and bottom with a quarter of an inch seam allowance. Once done, press it open.
Rotate again the block. Get the two pieces of blue 7 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips and sew them on top and bottom. Press it flat.
Sew the two pieces of 11″ x 2 1/4″ strips on top and bottom of the block. Press it flat.
Repeat the same process for block 2. For this one, you will alternate the background fabrics and printed ones.
Mark the midpoint on each side of the blocks and cut it in half in both directions using a ruler and rotary cutter. Repeat with the other block.
Swap 2 pieces from two corners and make 2 bento box blocks. Sew hem in rows first. Once done, sew the 2 rows together and press them flat.
