This air fryer spicy onion bloom recipe by Paula Deen on YouTube is a healthier option for deep-fried food. Blooming onions are such a pretty appetizer or snack and it reminds me of fair food. They can be very greasy, but this is cooked in an air fryer. I love spicy foods so this is interesting how it’s a spicy version for those that like spice as well. I’ve always seen blooming onions at chain steak restaurants but I don’t like onions so I’ve never had them. I don’t think it would be bad, because if it has a nice batter and it’s fried, it would be good.
First, prepare the onion and cut off 1/2 inch on the top and peel. Without slicing through the root end of the onion, make 12 to 16 cuts toward the center, creating wedge-shaped “petals” Remove about 1 inch of onion from the center, and gently separate the outer pieces without removing them. Next, once the blooming onion is nicely dredged and coated in breadcrumbs, spray the onion with cooking oil and place it in the air fryer. Set the temperature to 400 degrees, and air fry for about 5 minutes. Turn the onion, spray again, and cook for another 3 minutes.
Serve with Paula’s homemade spicy dipping sauce or your favorite sauce. Cook the blooming onion longer if you want it to be crispier, but she recommends setting the temperature lower and extends the cooking time.
