Easy Homemade Banana Pudding Ingredients

For the custard:

  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons of self-rising flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter

For the meringue:

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/3 cups of powdered sugar

Others:

  • 3 bananas
  • 1 box of Nilla wafers

How to Make Homemade Banana Pudding

Step 1:

In a saucepan with the heat turned off, add 2 cups of milk, 2 1/2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of granulated sugar, and a dash of kosher salt. Whisk until well combined.

Step 2:

Whisk in the egg yolks.

Step 3:

Turn on the heat and cook the pudding on medium heat, while whisking continuously. Whisk until it gets to your preferred consistency, which takes about 7 to 8 minutes. If it sticks to the spoon, the mixture is ready. Turn the heat off.

Step 4:

Add the butter and vanilla extract to the mixture. Whisk to combine.

Step 5:

Add a thin layer of the pudding in your 8″x 8″ baking dish, followed by a layer of Nilla wafers, and a layer of banana slices. Pour half of the pudding, then repeat the wafer and banana layers. Lastly, pour the remaining pudding. Set aside.

Step 6:

Make the meringue. Add four egg whites to a clean dry bowl and beat with a hand mixer. Add a teaspoon of cream of tartar and whisk until it stiffens. Next, gradually add the powdered sugar while whisking. Keep whisking until stiff peaks.

Step 7:

Transfer the meringue to the top of the pudding. Broil for about 1 to 2 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on it.
